Conclusion

The most challenging part of this ePortfolio was making it and writing it. The website took me a while to get used to and it was hard trying to keep within the word limit with so many questions to answer.

The most rewarding part about this unit was making new friends and hearing everyone’s views on the different topics that we discussed over the 14 weeks. It was interesting to hear their justifications of their opinions that were different than mine and showed me another side to various subjects. I also did learn a lot in this unit that I had never really taken into consideration, things like Jehovah’s Witness. It was also really interesting to talk about culture because my class was so diverse; we were able to understand a bit more from their point of view.

One of the most important things I learnt was culture, I have always been worried about offending someone from a different culture and not even realise. Because I didn’t rally have a lot of experience in culture, I was nervous about approaching it, but now I know the differences between acceptable and unacceptable. Similarly with disabled communication, I’m always worried that I will unnoticeably offend them. Learning about communication with them helped me feel more comfortable now when talking to them, I feel more confident than what I did starting this unit. Empathy was another topic that I felt had been impacted by, it gave me a deeper look on empathy and what it really means, I knew what it meant but I never thought how it could impact someone so largely when they are in a really scary situation and will defiantly be something I will take into being a Paramedic.

Managing Motivation

Motivation brainstorm, makinglearningeasier.wordpress.com, 2016

Managing Motivation is important in all aspects of life and can impact on your mental health. Motivation is key to striving for what you want to do, in this case, save lives. Setting goals is a great way for helping motivate yourself, these goal need to be realistic and achievable, using SMART (Simple, Measurable, Achievable, Recorded and Time-Based), is a great guide for goals (Whitehouse. 2012). In Paramedicine it is important to be motivated to care for patients in order to help the patients. If there is a lack of motivation, it can impact on the patient dramatically because there is no goal to help the patient.

Written Communication

Documentation Image, sgsc.edu.au, 2016

Documentation is needed for legal and medical reasons to benefit the patient Forge, J. (2014). Important clinical documents for paramedics are the consent and dismissal of paramedic transportation forms. Documenting the patients care is important for monitoring and viewing the patients progress. Constant and accurate documentation with written communication regarding the patient is organized and can improve the patients recovery through the viewing of their progress.

Management Styles and Communication Conflicts

In emergency situations, stress can appear in individuals, which can lead to communication conflicts. Learning management styles can prevent this from happening. Managing in retail has given me experience in communication conflicts, collaboration with my team allows us to work together and sort issues out. This is important in Paramedicine because we are dealing with lives and don’t have time to argue. By working as a team with everyone, I am able to provide a better patient outcome. (Chiarchiaro, White, Erncoff, Buddadhumaruk, Schuster, & Arnold. 2016) has allowed me to see strategies, which I can use in future communication conflicts.

Working in an Inter-Professional Team

Paramedics spend more time with each other than with any other profession, however when they do a handover of a patient at a hospital which requires inter-professional teamwork (Shoham, Harris, Mundt & McGaghie. 2016). Working with other professions is important because you work towards the common goal of getting the patient better. Paramedics will work with carers and nurses a lot of the time with the elderly or disabled patients. By working together and helping each other out, they are able to create a care plan effective for the patient.

Communicating with different Cultural Backgrounds

Australia has evolved into a multicultural society where there are many different cultures with different customs (Krys, Melanie Vauclair, Capaldi, Lun, Bond & Domínguez-Espinosa. et al. 2016). Working in such a diverse environment it is important that as a paramedic, we make everyone feel comfortable and welcome. Learning about different cultural backgrounds has shown me the differences in how they like to be cared for or talked to. Patients will be more adequately cared for in a way which is more comfortable for them, contributing to a calmer environment in which we can help the patient get a better health outcome.

Interviewing skills and Therapeutic Relationships

When interviewing a patient it is important to be relaxed in a professional manner, smile, be confident, patient centred and ask semi-structured and structured questions. Building therapeutic relationships is important in Paramedicine because I am first on scene. Building these relationships and interviewing the patient will help me to effectively treat the patient with the trust relationship (Brownie, Scott & Rossiter. 2016).

Active Listening

Active listening is non-bias and is great for building a therapeutic relationship with patients. Active listening is important for Paramedics because of mental health illnesses; depression, anxiety and Post traumatic stress are all common issues in todays society (Simpson, Truant, & Resnick. 2014). It should be used with every patient seen by paramedics, which can help with patient care, showing the patient that you can empathise with them. I believe that properly learning about active listening has taught me to listen more to people and what they have to say. The patient will also feel much better having someone to talk to, with someone listening.
